Hexagonal theatre

Climbing up a narrow staircase in the industrial hall made it possible to have a unique perspective from above on the design of the hexagonal theatre stage, the benches and lighting set up that was used for the Varjele dance theatre production.

All the little children

Helsinki Festival is known to support new promising talents and multi-arts productions. Advertised as "a dark intense dance performance about compassion and what happens when you lose it" made us curious to go to the premiere of Varjele, a contemporary shadow dance performance in a hexagonal shadow theatre. The audience was seated inside on benches next to the musicians and dancers performed outside and around the hexagonal stage.

Orkestra Mendoza

Hailing from Tuscon, Arizona, Orkestra Mendoza is a six-piece live band playing Latin indie rock with a twist of mariachi, merengue, mambo and rumba. For the first time in Finland, this concert was a fiesta of rhythms and exotic world music.

Janne Haavisto & The Shubie Brothers

In May this year, Janne Haavisto & The Shubie Brothers released the album "You Are Here". At Helsinki Festival they performed it live in a true feast of instrumental ska mixed with surf rock and other sweet-sounding rhythms.

Steel guitar virtuoso

Steel guitar by no one else than the Finnish musician legend Olli Haavisto who recorded and released music with eg Jim Pembroke Band, Hoedown, Tuomari Nurmio and others. Multi-instrumentalist Olli is the older brother to Janne and performed at this Helsinki Festival concert as the special guest of the evening. Olli was so cool being a humble virtuoso performing with an unusual Hawaiian steel guitar.

Relaxing atmosphere

The Huvila Festival Tent designed by Architects' Office Roy Mänttäri in 1995 is the main concert venue of the Helsinki Festival. Divided into two functional parts, the smaller tent serves as restaurant tent whereas the larger tent is used for world-class performances. This image shows the relaxing atmosphere at bar and food section.

The Naked Run

Another segment of a hundred meter long spray painted mural "The Naked Run" by HuskmitNavn. The artists found his inspiration for this work of art in one of the real traditions of Roskilde Festival. Every year since 1999, on the Saturday of the festival, festival-goers can participate a naked run around the camp site.

Grafitti Camp Roskilde 2013

The Danish Roskilde Festival is one of the largest music festivals in Europe and offers one of its kind of live experience. Nowadays the festival is much engaged with matters of sustainability, environmental issues, culture, art and co-creation amongst other directions.

valo.tv was invited to Roskilde Festival and took part of documenting a few of the Arts and Culture projects. This episode features the annual graffiti project which beautifies the festival area with originality. Over hundred of volunteer artists have painted one kilometer with world class graffiti before the festival officially started. During the festival every festival goer had a chance and opportunity to spray their own unique piece in the grafitti camp. Share and enjoy!
