Spectators

Spectators followed the play by seeing expressions and moves of modern dance performers only through their shadows and silhouettes. Moreover, the storyline was enhanced by the small orchestra Tölöläb playing instruments such as clarinet, oboe and mixing electronic music into the score. In all respects a mystic and unique realization.

All the little children

Helsinki Festival is known to support new promising talents and multi-arts productions. Advertised as "a dark intense dance performance about compassion and what happens when you lose it" made us curious to go to the premiere of Varjele, a contemporary shadow dance performance in a hexagonal shadow theatre. The audience was seated inside on benches next to the musicians and dancers performed outside and around the hexagonal stage.

Drummer Janne Haavisto

Finland for some time now has been known for excellent authentic rock and surf oriented instrumental music. Janne Haavisto used to be in the Finnish 60s-style rock cult band Laika & The Cosmonauts. At present day Haavisto, a drummer, guitarist, composer and producer presented his newest band project with The Shubie Brothers at the Helsinki Festivals Huvila Tent.

Peter Solo

Togolese Peter Solo is the frontman of the French sextet Vaudou Game. His appearance resembles a voodoo priest: bare-breasted, dressed in green trousers, and ordained with natural dyes, beads and embellishments. Peter played flawless chords on his guitar with a soulful voice sounding like James Brown.

Petit/Bassy/Fourneyron

Critically acclaimed Cameroonian musician Blick Bassy was the first afro artists of the evening at the Helsinki Festival. Bassy was accompanied by French cellist Clémont Petit and trombonist Fidel Fourneyron. Together the trio recorded Blick Bassy's latest album Akö.

A scene in a living room

Latest once the audience got to the scene in the living room of the Forester family it became apparent that Janáček’s original is not the tale of a forest animal. Vixen is a modern play about a homeless young girl looking for shelter in the Greater London area. All around the living room spectators were seated on sofas, chairs or on the floor within the theatrical setting. Equipped with headphones they follow the emerging singer's dramatic dialogues sang in tenor and soprano while listening to the musical score.

To begin with

For the first time, Helsinki's Konepajan Bruno opened up to be a venue for an opera performance. Hailing from England Silent Opera and Finnish Koominen Opera presented Vixen - an unforgettable immersive theatre and silent disco concept. The libretto by Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s 1924 opera The Cunning Little Vixen unveiled a modern play about love, tragedy and death. To begin with the first act all audience needed beforehand to collect headphones and wait for further instructions.

In chord (Saimaa)

Saimaa won numerous awards for the most popular rock music album of the year 2015 in Finland. Most of the compositions are made by Matti Mikkola (the guitarist with the white sweater) who performs his energetic orchestral works with many musicians.

Olurombi (Aiyekooto & Afrobeat International)

Aiyekooto & Afrobeat International is Afro Finnish Big Band with fifteen musicians. The band released their first album Olurombi in 2013. This image is taken at a Funky Elephant event in Teurastamo, the urban food centre in Helsinki.

Turboweekend

Turboweekend is a Danish synthesiser rock band, formed in 2006 in Copenhagen by Martin Øhlers Petersen, Silas Bjerregaard and Morten Køie. Anders Stig Møller joined the group of artists in 2009 as the fourth member. The band has recorded and released four albums by now, whereas the second album "Ghost of a Chance" has sold over 15000 units and reached the gold record status in Denmark. Turboweekend has toured extensively in Europe and is well known to be a superb live act.

Mads Langer

Festivals are always great to learn about new artists you never hear about before. The range of artists performing on Wonderfestiwall is mainly for the younger audience. The biggest highlight of the evening has been the Danish artist singer-songwriter, Mads Langer. His repertoire is full of songs with a melancholic feel, and the audience enjoyed Mads playing the guitar amongst other instruments.
